The Silver Spring Camera Club is proud to open its 2018-2019 season with an amazing presentation from landscape photographer, Bernard Chen. Bernard will dazzle you with his beautiful images of nature along with time lapse photos and cinematography.
COMPETITION COLUMN
Hi to all SSCC members. I’m very excited about the upcoming Competitions season. The competitions, held the 2nd Thursday of each month, provide a great opportunity to share your images with fellow members and have them critiqued by professional photographers. Though their judgments about the images and their selection of winning photos are necessarily subjective, the judges invariably offer helpful insights and suggestions about the entered images, whether they’re yours or those of another member. In my 3+ years as a SSCC member, I have yet to leave a competition without having picked up something useful that I can incorporate into my photography.
For the new Competitions season, we have what I believe will be a fun, stimulating and diverse array of competition topics. Our repeating mainstays – Open, Nature and Monochrome, will be joined by three new topics – Rural/Country; Red; and Action/Motion. Please refer to the Member Handbook and/or each month’s Cable Release for the definition of each topic.
Here’s the schedule for the season:
- September – Open

- February – Red
- March – Open
- April – Action/Motion
- May – Monochrome Photography
- June – End of Year Competition (special rules apply)
As indicated, the topic for the season’s first competition on September 13th is Open, which gives you full freedom to enter images on any topic (or no topic) that you choose. The only requirement is that original images must be created by a light sensitive device, like a camera or scanner. Any subsequent alterations or manipulations of the images are permissible, so have at it.
Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected (digital) images must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on September 6, Speaker Night. The images should be emailed to: SSCCphotography@yahoo.com. Print images are submitted when you bring them to the competition. (One important detail – In order to participate in the competition, you must have paid the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)
To learn the nitty gritty about the competitions, please refer to the Competition Rules (2015 Rev.) and the Members Handbook, both of which are accessible from the SSCC website. Of course, if you have any questions about the competitions, please feel free to contact me, Larry Gold, at competition@ssccphotography.org.
Finally, our monthly competitions are meant to be engaging, interactive member events, rather than dry, impersonal contests. As such, we heartily encourage all members who submit photo entries, whether print or electronic, to be present at the competitions. I say this for several reasons:
- First, the critiques the judges offer of the photo entries can be valuable for the creators of the images. After all, the SSCC enlists our judges not only to have them select their favorite images for ribbons but, as importantly, to offer their professional photographic expertise and insights as they evaluate the images.
- Second, audience members really appreciate hearing from ribbon winners a little of the contextual history of their images. Knowing where an image was made or how it was processed can be informative and often entertaining.
- And third, being able to personally congratulate award winners makes for a more vibrant, fun experience for the audience. If a ribbon winner is absent when his or her name is called, the enthusiasm the audience wants to convey to the winner is unavoidably diminished. So, for all these reasons; if you plan to enter an image in a competition this season, please try your best to attend the event. It really helps strengthen the ties that bind us together as the SSCC.
MIKE THOMAS TO JUDGE OUR OPEN COMPETITION – SEPTEMBER 13
Mike Thomas will be our judge for the Open competition on September 13.
Mike’s interest in photography started in 1979 with his father’s Nikkormat. In 2006, after years in a darkroom, he switched to digital photography. This year he was awarded Master Photographer by the Bowie-Crofton Camera Club, becoming one of five Master Photographers in the club’s 50 year existence. Mike has also been awarded Master of Monochrome Photography in the Arundel Camera Club. He is an amateur photographer who does this for fun. While his favorite subject is wildlife, he likes to shoot just about anything.
A CLOSER FOCUS – SEPTEMBER 20

An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations
Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand. There will also be half an hour for 10 minute presentations by members. This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore? Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc. Or bring a gadget to share.
For September we will have presentations and photo sharing:
- Picture assignment #1: Bring several of your abstract photos. (tips)
- Picture assignment #2: Bring examples from your summer projects.
- Dave Powell will talk and show techniques he uses in Lightroom.
- David Blass will discuss and share how he is obtaining spectacular in-flight bird photographs from his balcony!
Future topics of A Closer Focus include: compositional strength, HDR, or anything else photographic you want to bring to the table. This is an opportunity for you to provide input to the SSCC experience.

SEPTEMBER 3 FIELD TRIP TO THE MARYLAND RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

On Labor Day, Monday, September 3, we will go to the Maryland Renaissance Festival. You will have an opportunity to shoot hundreds of people in weird medieval costumes, all of whom love to have their pictures taken; jousting, archery, jugglers, street entertainment, Shakespeare type stage productions, feasting, drinking, and general bacchanalia.

FIELD TRIP TO ANTIETAM BATTLEFIELD – SEPTEMBER 22 – new date!
On Saturday, September 22, we will go to the Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This is the site of the bloodiest day in American military history, occurring during the Civil War on September 17, 1862. This trip includes opportunities for great nature walks, hikes through battlefields with memorials and markers, an excellent visitors center, and the 200 year old town with its imposing military cemetery. END OF YEAR CELEBRATION – JUNE 14, 2018
The End of Year Celebration on June 14 was a great success! We had a potluck dinner at our regular meeting location in Fellowship Hall, mingled, and then handed out awards to recognize the year’s outstanding photographers. There were some excellent raffle prizes and door prizes. Here are a number of photos from our celebration, thanks to Andrew Rein and Phil Boyer.
SSCC CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS REVISION AND VOTE
Prior to the end of our 2017-2018 club year a committee of several board members reviewed and suggested revisions (amendments) to the SSCC Constitution and By-Laws. These were reviewed, revised, and finalized by the board for your review and vote.
The current Constitution and By-Laws may be found on pages 42 – 48 of the Member Handbook. According to the Constitution ( Article XVII – AMENDMENTS, on Page 47):
“This Constitution and By-Laws may be amended by a 2/3 vote of members present at a regular Club meeting, including written proxies. Amendments may be proposed by any Club member. A proposed amendment may not be voted on at the meeting in which it is proposed, but shall be voted on after publication in the Cable Release and not later than the second regular Club meeting following such publication.“

MAY 5 FIELD TRIP TO THE KINETIC SCULPTURE RACE IN BALTIMORE, MARYLAND
On May 5, SSCC members went to see the Annual Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore! Crowds screamed and cheered with amazement as sculptures including a gigantic turtle, crocodile, space cow, and pink poodle floated by on bicycle-based contraptions in Fells Point.
From the American Visionary Art Museum— this is an annual race of wacky, imaginative, totally human-powered works of art, designed to travel through streets, mud pits, and in deep harbor waters. The vehicles are typically constructed out of used bicycles, gears, and parts along with fabric, fiberglass, paint, and other artistic materials. Teams don costumes that complement their wild conveyances.

FIELD TRIP TO THE MARYLAND SHEEP AND WOOL FESTIVAL – MAY 6
On Sunday, May 6, SSCC traveled to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. The festival included live music, a parade of breeds, a sheep-to-shawl contest, border collie demonstrations, and a photography competition. Food vendors sold lamb dishes including lamb burgers, gyros, and lamb sausage. There are also lamb cooking contests and demonstrations. Lisa Auerbach, Gerry Woods, and Andrew Rein provided photographs from the trip:

WHAT IS PSA AND HOW IS IT PRONOUNCED?
Well, the second part of the question is easy…. it’s pronounced P-S-A and it stands for Photographic Society of America. Our camera club is one of over 500 worldwide clubs that are PSA members. Additionally, a number of our SSCC members have individual PSA memberships. In fact, there are about 6,000 people who are PSA members. ( read more )
MPA STREET PHOTOGRAPHY SEMINAR
The Maryland Photography Alliance (MPA) is proud to present a seminar on “Classic Street Photography: What the Masters Can Teach Us“.
What makes a great street photograph? What techniques, equipment, compositional elements and psychology help elevate street shooting to a fine art? In this projector-driven seminar led by Leo Howard Lubow, we’ll explore these questions and others as we view and deconstruct the work and general approach of a variety of street masters, including Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Elliot Erwitt, Diane Arbus, Sebastião Salgado, Garry Winogrand, Steve McCurry, Joel Meyerowitz, Vivian Maier, and a host of others whose work we promise you’ve never seen. Along the way, we’ll also consider whether all great street photographers have at least one element in common: an underlying vision or personal philosophy of the world.
The date of this 1-Day Seminar is Saturday, October 13, 2018.

It’s September so that must mean it’s back to school time. This is similar to other times of the year that trigger emotions, such as New Years for self-reflection and personal goals, Thanksgiving for what we have and the people around us or even April’s beginning of baseball season signaling summer fun with outside activities. MEMBER’S PHOTO SELECTED FOR DISPLAY IN JOE MILLER CENTER COLLECTION
Joe Miller runs an annual Abstract Photography Exhibit in his Center for the Photographic Arts in Gainesville, VA. Miller asked Kate Woodward if he could exhibit her photograph Pastel Melody as part of his permanent collection in the Center. Kate had exhibited the photograph in the 2018 Abstract Photography Exhibit in May. Not surprisingly, Kate agreed to provide her photo to the collection. According to Miller, Freeman Patterson, whose work Miller also exhibits in his collection, said that he liked Kate’s photograph the best of those shown in this year’s abstract exhibit.

We belong to a wine club in VA that meets each month to consider such imponderables as the difference between cabernet and chardonnay. In May, the subject was sabrage, the art of extracting a champagne cork with a sword. (read more)

This is a photo of a watch I inherited from my grandfather and that I shot before, last time it was in color and a wider angle. This was taken with a Laowa 65mm 2x macro lens and used focus stacking. About 25 images were combined in Helicon Focus to get the full depth of field. Black and White conversion in Silver Effects Pro.

END OF THE YEAR COMPETITION FOR 2017-2018: JUNE 14, 2018
The End of the Year Competition winners represent the independent judging of member-selected projected and print entries from monthly club competitions in the 2017-2018 season. There are four main categories: Advanced Prints, Novice Prints, Advanced Projected, and Novice Projected. Awards are given for first, second, and third place, and multiple honorable mentions – the number of awards depends on the total number of entries in the category. Two special awards are given as well: the Len Tuchin Award for Best in Show, and the Joyce Bayley Award for Best in Show, Nature.
Photographers of the Year are awarded in the categories of Advanced Prints, Novice Prints, Advanced Projected, and Novice Projected for the members that earn the most points during the year in those categories.
Star Awards for Photographic Excellence are given to members that earn multiples of 35 points. This year we have Star Awards from one star through five stars.
For members that achieve 200, 400, or 800 points earned in competition, the designation of Master, Grand Master, and Hall of Fame is awarded, respectively. We have three members that have achieved these rare designations this year.
A Service Award is given to the member receiving the most board votes recognizing service to the club during the year.
This year we have added a recognition to members with five or more years of club membership. This is the Milestone Award. We have 17 members with between 5 and 41 years in the club!

- Multi-day photography trips to places within and beyond the United States.
- Photography Conferences in Nearby States
