What is PSA and How is It Pronounced?

by Pete Morton

Well, the second part of the question is easy…. it’s pronounced P-S-A and it stands for Photographic Society of America.

Our camera club is one of over 500 worldwide clubs that are PSA members.  Additionally, a number of our SSCC members have individual PSA memberships.  In fact, there are about 6,000 people who are PSA members.

The PSA is an organization that provides a wide range of services that promote photography and benefits to its members.  Individual members can participate in competitions, study groups and on-line education programs designed to advance their photographic knowledge and skills. Competitions are held for clubs, councils, federations and chapters, also.  Member image galleries are always available for viewing.  An annual youth photography showcase, open to all students of high school age, is conducted as well.  Opportunities for image analysis and critique as well as discounts for both hardware and software products are available for all members.  In addition to special access to a Member’s Only area on this dynamic and informative website, every member receives the high-quality PSA Journal each month.

The beginning of the PSA, under the name Associated Camera Clubs of America, started 99 years ago.  Its mission guides all the many programs, services, and activities of PSA and defines the organization well. It reads:

    • The Photographic Society of America (PSA) promotes the art and science of photography as a means of communication, image appreciation, and cultural exchange.
    • PSA provides education, information, inspiration, and opportunity for all persons interested in photography.
  • The Society fosters personal growth and expression, creativity, excellence, and ethical conduct in all aspects of photographic endeavor.

PSA membership is only $45/year and includes a huge number of learning and participating opportunities. Take a look at the web site (psa-photo.org) and consider whether this organization will help further your photography interests and goals.
