Welcome to the Silver Spring Camera Club. Visitors and new members are invited to our public meetings, which take place the first three Thursdays of every month, September through May. We also welcome you to our field trips. Signups are through Meetup.
All kinds of camera equipment are embraced; including mirrorless, phone, dSLR, film, and drone.
Meetings are either in-person, or virtual on Zoom.
The first meeting of the month is our speaker night, held virtually.

Advanced Projected
- First Place: Deadvlei Morning, Sherm Edwards
- Second Place: Burrowing Owl, Beth Koller
- Third Place: Buck Moon, Ilona Linnoila
Sherm Edwards ~ Deadvlei Morning
Deadvlei is a white clay pan in a valley between the dunes in the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. The 600- to 900-year-old camel thorn trees do not decay because the Namib Desert is so arid. I took this shot fairly early in the morning. Later, as we were leaving, clouds were rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean and this view would have been much different, likely with fog.
Intermediate Projected
- First Place: Young Leopard, Kent Morris
- Second Place: Grazing White Rhino, Kent Morris
- Third Place: Catching a Foothold, Jim Riley
- Honorable Mention: Milky Way, Tanya Riseman
Jim Riley ~ Catching a Foothold
‘Catching a Foothold’ was taken in the Grand Canyon riverside. Many plants in the Grand Canyon are desert typical plants but this one white flower looked like a seed had blown in from a distant place to find this foothold of soil. The white flowers were distinct against the reddish rock face.
Novice Projected
- First Place: Ranthambore Lake, Tom McLaughlin
- Second Place: Heron in Flight, Owen Epstein
Tom McLaughlin ~ Ranthambore Lake
This was taken in the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajahstan, India. We spent a morning being bounced around over awful dirt tracks ostensibly looking for tigers. We saw a few deer, but no tigers. When we stopped at a small lake I spotted a large bird on a branch. I first thought the shot was ruined when it took flight just as I hit the shutter. I cropped it and airbrushed out a bit of distracting vegetation in one corner.
Print Image Competition
Combined Print
- First Place: Forest Friends, Will Rabinovich
- Second Place: Sea Stack Sunset, Will Rabinovich
- Third Place: Ripples and Lily Pads, Sherm Edwards
- Honorable Mention: Murmuration, Ilona Linnoila
Will Rabinovich ~ Forest Friends
This image was taken in Redwoods National Park during a very foggy morning. The fog was just starting to clear which resulted in “spotlight” on the rhododendron. I was trying to capture the size difference between the plant and the redwood tree. Taken with a Sony ARIV at 60 mm. Printed with an Epson P800 on Red River Ultrasatin Pro paper.
