All kinds of camera equipment are embraced; including mirrorless, phone, dSLR, film, and drone.

Meetings are either in-person, or virtual on Zoom.

The first meeting of the month is our speaker night, held virtually.

In person meetings will take place on the second Thursday of each month, and will generally be our competition. In person meetings are held at Christ the King Presbyterian Church (formerly called Northwood Presbyterian Church), 1200 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD.

Deadvlei is a white clay pan in a valley between the dunes in the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia. The 600- to 900-year-old camel thorn trees do not decay because the Namib Desert is so arid. I took this shot fairly early in the morning. Later, as we were leaving, clouds were rolling in from the Atlantic Ocean and this view would have been much different, likely with fog.

The Young Leopard was taken on a late afternoon game drive in the Okonjima Nature Reserve in central Namibia. The leopard was preparing to climb up into a tree where the leopard’s mother and a sibling were located. In the tree was a remains of a springbok the mother leopard had killed and brought up into the tree for her and her offspring to eat. Canon R5 mk ii, Canon EF 100-400 L. Focal length: 400mm, f/5.6, 1/2500 sec, ISO: 4000.

Over the past few years, I’ve developed a bit of an obsession with the Great Blue Heron while photographing along the shoreline at Huntley Meadows Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Unlike smaller birds, herons tend to hold still, making them ideal subjects. When they finally take flight, it provides the perfect opportunity to practice my panning technique using my mirrorless setup and long telephoto lens. Sometimes the blue color in the plumage is hard to discern, requiring me to brighten and saturate the feathers during post-processing. Nikon Z8, F6, 470mm, 1/2000, ISO 500.

This image was taken in Redwoods National Park during a very foggy morning. The fog was just starting to clear which resulted in “spotlight” on the rhododendron. I was trying to capture the size difference between the plant and the redwood tree. Taken with a Sony ARIV at 60 mm. Printed with an Epson P800 on Red River Ultrasatin Pro paper.
