ESSDRAS SUAREZ TO SPEAK ON “THE RESILIENCY OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT” ON MAY 2

On May 2, Essdras Suarez returns to be our speaker. Last time he spoke to us we had record attendance, and for good reason.  Essdras provided us with an outstanding presentation on street photography.  This time he will speak on “Being a Photojournalist: ‘The Resiliency of the Human Spirit’ “.

Essdras is a two-time Pulitzer prizewinning photojournalist. His images have been published in National Geographic, Time Magazine, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others. He was a staff photographer for the Boston Globe for 12 years. While there, he received national and international accolades. He has also received awards for portrait, food, product, and travel photography. (read more)

COMPETITION COLUMN

The competition on May 9 will be the Monochrome topic:

The term “Monochrome Photography” contemplates images that use only a single color, including the full array of shades of that color. So, for example, black and white photos, with black as the single color and its multiple shades of gray, are monochrome. Other single colors and their shades are equally acceptable. Under this definition, a sepia tone photo is acceptable, but a sepia tone photo containing a red umbrella would not qualify as a monochrome. Any subject matter is acceptable. In addition, a photo is acceptable if was originally taken as a color image, as long as the image presented for the competition has been rendered into monochrome.

Please be mindful that electronic submissions for projected images must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on May 2, Speaker Night, at the new email address: competition@ssccphotography.org  ( read more here ).

>>> Be sure to follow file naming and file size requirements as outlined and solved for you in these two articles by David Terao.  The first one is for PC users, and the second is for Mac users:

A CLOSER FOCUS – MAY 16

by David W. Powell

An opportunity to share ideas, images, questions, and inspirations

Half an hour will be an open forum discussing issues at hand.  A half hour is devoted to presentations by members.  And a half hour is set aside for member image reviews.

This is always a great evening of sharing and learning. What topics would you like to explore?  Topics are very wide ranging, such as photo book reviews, an aspect of your own photography that you’d like to share, reviews or discussion of gallery shows, photo gear, software, etc.  Or bring a gadget to share.

In April we had two presentations and ran out of time to do our camera breakouts.  For May we will do camera breakouts, and we will do that first!  We will then do photo sharing, and finally a discussion with the remaining time:

  • Camera Breakout Sessions:   Bring in your camera, any accessories you want (e.g. flashes, triggers, intervalometers, … ), the manuals, and any other materials relating to their operation.  We will break out onto several tables to discuss camera operations, taking advantage of the experienced users in the club.  We will have a Nikon table, a Canon table, and others (e.g. Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, etc).
  • Picture assignment:  Bring in your monochrome photos to share and discuss.  Monochrome is our competition topic for the month, but if you’d prefer to talk about something else bring in some other photos you’d like to share and discuss.
  • Discussion: With any remaining time we will have a general discussion about “fill-flash”.  Fill flash is a photographic technique used to brighten deep shadow areas, typically outdoors on sunny days, though the technique is useful any time the background is significantly brighter than the subject of the photograph, particularly in backlit subjects.
  • Book/Gear Reviews:  What book/gear/software have you experienced that you’d like to review?

♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦♦

Future topics of A Closer Focus include: compositional strength, HDR, or anything else photographic you want to bring to the table. This is an opportunity for you to provide input to the SSCC experience.

If you would like to be on the agenda, please email me at:

CLUB NEWS

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL ELECTIONS ON MAY 9

We will vote to fill the open Executive Council positions at our Competition Night meeting on May 9.  Each of these positions is vital to the functioning of the Club, and provides the opportunity to guide the club in the activities we enjoy.   These key positions are as follows:

  • President: leads club meetings, guides club activities through the chair leaders
  • Vice President: leads meetings in the absence of the president, coordinates the year-end awards event
  • Secretary: takes notes at monthly board meetings, publishes the minutes
  • Treasurer: maintains the financial records of the club, chairs the Finance Committee, and maintains the roster of members.
  • Directors (3):advise on club activities, coordinate committees, approve expenditures

Going into May’s publication of the Cable Release we have the following slate of candidates interested in filling three of the four open Executive Council positions:  President – Catherine Honigsberg, Vice President – Open, Secretary – Maude Svensson, and Treasurer – Bruce Schaefer.

The three serving Directors are Bob Catlett, Michael Koren, and Pete Morton (none of these positions is currently up for reelection)

We do not yet have a candidate for Vice President as of May 1. According to the Constitution and By-Laws, “[the] Vice President shall stand in for the President as required and carry out such responsibilities as the President directs.”

The person filling this role will have training (plus notes and references) available from the outgoing Vice President, Tanya Riseman, as well as help from the President and other board members.

If you are interested in filling the role as Vice President please contact any member of the board to be put on the slate for the May 9th election.   Face-to-face, phone, or email are all just fine.  A set of SSCC email addresses for the various officers and committee chairs can be found in the following link:  SSCC Officers and Chairs

PROPOSED CHANGE TO NEW MEMBER DUES

After discussion of what might be a more fair dues policy for new members joining after March 1, a proposed change in new member dues was discussed at the last board meeting.   This proposal will be voted on by the board at the board meeting on May 23, but first, your comments and questions are solicited.

As a reminder, our current full-year membership dues, per our Membership Form,  are as follows:

Individual: $45
Student:    $35
Family:      $65

Full-year dues cover the club year from September through May.  After January 31, only for new members, reduced dues for the remainder of the club year are:

Individual: $35
Student:    $30
Family:      $55

The thought is that we may be discouraging some potential new members from joining at the tail end of the club year by charging them the above rates.  The proposal is to give new members joining after March 1 the choice of paying either

  1. the reduced rates currently established for new members joining after January 31 that give them membership for the remainder of the current year, or
  2. the full-year membership rates for the entire next year – basically making the end of the current year free for them.

If approved, the proposed change would first take effect in the next club year (Sept 2019 – May 2020), and would affect only those new members joining after March 1, 2020.

Please send your written comments on the proposed change to our President, Catherine Honigsberg, at president@ssccphotography.org by May 21 (2 days before the next board meeting).

Thanks!

YEAR END COMPETITION ENTRY DATES AND RULES

The Year End Competition is not about selecting the best entries for a single month, but rather selecting the best entries from the monthly competitions for the entire club year (September 2018 through May 2019).  The results are announced at the Year End Celebration on June 13.

Send an email to SSCC Historian, Norm Bernache, at normbernache@comcast.net  if you would like a list of all of your print and projected images submitted from September 2018 to April 2019.

As in other competitions, the judge will select first, second, and third place winners, and as many honorable mentions as the number of entries requires. There are no ribbons or points awarded; however, a Best in Show award will be presented, known as the Len Tuchin Award.

Be aware of the submission deadlines in May:

End of Year Competition Entry Schedule

  • Print Deadline:          Thursday, May 2 or May 9 – drop off at meeting
  • Projected Deadline:  Friday, May 10 (midnight) – via email

Each member may submit up to 5 projected and 5 print images from those that s/he entered in monthly club competitions this 2018-2019 season. Eligible submissions need not have won an award in the monthly competition(s) in which they were submitted. But please remember — images submitted for the year-end competition must be identical to those submitted in the regular season competitions and entries must be submitted in the same categories (print or projected) in which they were originally submitted.

Complete Details on the Rules and the Submission Forms are Found Here.

If you have any questions about the Year End Competition, please feel free to contact Larry Gold at competition@ssccphotography.org.

CHANGING THE FILE SIZE AND FILE NAME FOR SSCC COMPETITIONS – NOW FOR MAC USERS – BY DAVID TERAO

A number of SSCC members have had difficulty in submitting images for Projected (digital) competitions that meet SSCC requirements.  The issues happen for both the file naming requirements and for file size limitations.

In a previous articles, we discussed how to resize and rename projected-images for SSCC competitions using Adobe’s Lightroom (pg 34 of Member Handbook) and, for non-Adobe users, using a free software called Irfanview (Resize-Rename with Irfanview).  Although Lightroom may be used by both Mac and PC users, the instructions for using Irfanview could only be used by PC users.

This tutorial is intended for those Mac users who do not use Lightroom.  The program we will use is called Preview and is Mac’s flagship OS program for editing photos (The other two Mac photo programs are Image Capture and Photos).  Preview can import photos directly from a digital camera or iPhone and is a useful tool for resizing and renaming images to meet SSCC competition requirements as well as converting images to other formats and making color correction, if necessary.

David has put together an article on how to resize and rename files using this provided Mac OS software product.  (read more)

HOW TO CREATE PANORAMIC IMAGES – REPRISE AND REVISE – BY DENNIS FREEMAN

Ten-image Panorama of Lake Artemesia, College Park, by Dennis Freeman

At April’s A Closer Focus meeting I presented slides on How to Create Panoramic Images.  I covered why one might want to use a DSLR to do panoramas rather than do them with a smartphone camera or just one shot with a wide-angle lens.  I showed by example that one can get away with a handheld DSLR camera and some stitching software (e.g. Lightroom or Photoshop, among many).  But, things aren’t always that simple, and sometimes plain old camera geometry will mess it up.  I showed a case with an object in the foreground that compromised the panoramic with anything but a tripod, ball head, and special purpose pano hardware.

Since then several members told me that they are inspired to try it for themselves, and are thinking of giving it a whirl without spending money on special pano equipment that they aren’t sure they’ll really need.  That is definitely doable.  I have put together some additional instructions to help with this, and rearranged the material into three different presentations.

The first presentation is for those that just want to handhold their camera, and don’t need to get into the weeds:

How to Create Handheld Panoramic Images

The second presentation is for those that would like to take advantage of the control that their tripod provides in making a panorama:

How to Create Panoramic Images with just a Tripod

The third presentation is for those that would like to have no restrictions in making their panoramas, include both foreground and background objects, and want to acquire and use a panorama gear kit:

 KERNELS OF KOREN

The end of the regular Club season is upon us and many are preparing for the summer break. As with all endings there are beginnings that follow. It’s a natural cycle. In our case the beginning is a new Club year starting in September, and with many beginnings, there are resolutions we set to map out the goals and accomplishments for what awaits. Now is a good time to set some photographic resolutions to accomplish over the summer so you have a head start on what you enter in competition, share at A Closer Focus, or improve your skills for future field trips. …  ( read more )

This image was taken at Don Becker's Ballet Photography Workshop using a silhouette lighting (two continuous lights were used on either side of the ballerina pointed at the white background). I took this shot at the 2018 NAS PAX River Air Expo. I was using Nikon's 18-300 lens a crop body, so I had a reach of 450mm. It's a little soft on the long edge, so I think next time I head to an air show I'll rent a higher quality lens. Regardless, I had a great time and got some really great images of the Blue Angels and other performers. Would be a great field trip for the club some day!

ADVANCED PROJECTED

  • 1st Place:                      Bob Peters                        –  Rainy Day Bike Ride
  • 2nd Place:                    Sherm Edwards                –  Rushing River
  • 3rd Place:                    Tanya Riseman                 –  Woman on High Wheel
  • Honorable Mention:  Michael Tran                     –  Flipping
  • Honorable Mention:  Sherm Edwards                –  Leaving the Nest

Advanced Projected ~ Bob Peters ~ Rainy Day Bike Ride

Image 1 of 5

This picture was taken in Vietnam and is one of about 20 pictures of bikes and motorcycles on this rainy day. Taken with a Nikon D700 at 1/6 seconds at f32 and ISO 100, and with a 28-300 mm lens at 78 mm. It was cropped to eliminate wasted space behind the bike. The expression on the girls face was pure luck.

NOVICE PROJECTED

  • 1st Place:                     Renee Schaefer                 –  Wipeout
  • 2nd Place:                   Karen Finkelman               –  Stik Figures
  • 3rd Place:                    Dennis Freeman               –  Flying Pig
  • Honorable Mention:  Dan Gottlieb                     –  Hoi An Fisherman
  • Honorable Mention:  Ilona Linnoila                    –  Skiers Heading Up and Down in Fog

Novice Projected ~ Renee Schaefer ~ Wipeout

Image 1 of 5

This image was taken in Munich, Germany. There is a river that runs through the city park. To create waves, chunks of concrete have been submerged into the river. Surfers use these waves as an opportunity to surf the river. They jump into the river one by one and ride the waves across the river until they wipeout. The next surfer then jumps in and this goes on for hours.
