Arik Gorban

Silver Spring Camera Club welcomes our February speaker, Arik Gorban, who will present on the topic of Infrared Photography.  Arik’s presentation will provide a detailed introduction to Infrared (IR) photography with a brief demonstration of post processing of IR images.  After sharing a short history and providing important definitions, Arik will discuss the reasons for using infrared for creative photography, talk about gear considerations, camera conversion options, characteristics of infrared images and post processing.  The demonstration of post processing will be done in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop.  However, similar processes can be done using other tools. COMPETITION COLUMN

Our February topic is High Key or Low Key.

High-Key or Low-Key Photography encompasses images that have been exposed or manipulated post-processing, so that the key tones are lighter than the mid-tone ideal, (meaning that shadows are brighter and more open, usually conveying to the image a light airy feel) (high-key); or, conversely, so that the key tones are darker than the mid-tone ideal (meaning the highlights are dimmer, the shadows dense and the overall image looking darker and more brooding) (low-key).

Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition. The images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight on Thursday, February 3. (One important detail – In order to participate in the competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.)

Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the year:

  • March – Open
  • April – Patterns or Geometric Forms
  • May – Monochrome Photography
  • June – End of Year Competition (special rules apply)

DENISE SILVA – JUDGE – FEBRUARY 10 HIGH KEY OR LOW KEY COMPETITION

Denise Silva

Denise Silva’s interest in photography started when her grandmother would share images from her travels to Egypt and Africa for safari. The evenings watching slideshows set the seed. 35 years later those seeds took root and inspired Denise to embrace photography, and more specifically travel photography.

Denise has been recognized as one of the Top 200 Women Photographers Who Inspire by Nature Photo Guides and has had multiple articles published in Extraordinary Vision Magazine. Her passion is to share her knowledge of photography, while introducing people to the amazing landscapes, wildlife, and people all over the world.

She has contributed multiple articles to Fujifilm X/GFX USA website and has been interviewed by Peggy Farren, of Understanding Photography, on Overcoming the Challenges of Street Photography Denise recently had three images published in Black & White Magazine, 2021, Smartphone issue. Denise is also featured in the 2021 Lenswork, Our Magnificent Planet 2021 edition, available in December 2021.

FUN WITH IPHONE PANORAMAS

by Tanya Riseman

This article was originally published in the January 2022 Cable Release. It is posted here with additional illustrative photos.

One day in June 2021, it popped into my head: what if I rotated my iPhone the wrong way when taking a panorama? This was the start of a fun, hit-or-miss exploration with my iPhone SE 2nd generation. (Read more.)

I took this image in Washington Square Park in New York. Several chess games were in progress in the park, but this was the only one that had an interested observer. I was struck by the diversity of the players, accurately reflecting the culture of the park. Sony RX 10 IV, 600mm, f/8.0, ISO 640, 1/50s.

NOVICE PROJECTED

1st Place: Larry Brauer ~ Man With Orange Ball

Last year, our condominium building held an outdoor “Pandemic Party.” Looking down from my condo balcony (24 floors up), I saw this gentleman standing in the front of the building holding an orange ball. The brightly-colored ball grabbed my attention, along with the repeating patterns of the stone pavers. With my trusty zoom lens, I carefully reached over the balcony, with the camera strap around my neck, and snapped this shot.
