I took this image in the Japanese Garden at Hillwood. It was mid-morning, and the woods were backlit by lovely morning sunlight, which highlighted the autumn colors. I used intentional camera movement to create an impressionistic look, while still attempting to retain detail in the leaves.

INTERMEDIATE AND NOVICE PROJECTED (combined)

First Place: Pretty in Pink, Gerry Woods

Second Place: Kenilworth Second Life, Michele Destin-van Rijn

Third Place: Nobody Comes, Nobody Goes, Maurice Belanger

Honorable Mention: Kenilworth Lotus Bud with Dragonfly, Diane Sanders

Honorable Mention: Man’s Best Friend 3, Gerry Woods

The field trip to Kenilworth was on a very bright hot day. Getting the light right without blowing out the highlights was a challenge. I was using an 85 mm lens. The angle of the shot made for a strange perspective. I edited in both Lightroom and Photoshop, using lots of masking, and cropped to emphasize the lotus bud in relation to the distant dragonfly.

COMBINED PRINT COMPETITION

First Place: Green Sink and Toilet, Ilona Linnoila

Second Place: LaLa at Noon, Tom Allen

Third Place: Sly Eye of Glen Echo, Beth Koller

The picture was taken on a field trip to the West Virginia Penitentiary in Moundsville, WVa in the summer of 2023. Old cells had lots of prisoners’ art, which was often quite vulgar. They also contained patches of very bright colors that caught my eye. (Sony 7r IV with Sony FE 70-200mm F4 G OSS lens. 0.4 sec, f/9.0, ISO 800.)
