Member Snapshots – Susan Green

Susan Green found her way to SSCC via an internet search on camera clubs in the area, but her interest in photography goes back a bit further than that.  About 8 years ago Susan was planning a trip to Norway and was expecting the scenery to be eye candy.  With this in mind, she purchased her first DSLR.  Although she got some great photographs, she realized that there is more to getting breathtaking shots than just having a great camera: two of her shortcomings were not shooting in RAW and not knowing how to use the hyperfocal point for landscape photography.  With her knowledge today, there may be another trip to Norway in her future to do it all again.  Like many of us, the camera bug bit, and that first Nikon D-40 turned into a D-700, then a D-80, and now she is shooting with her first full-frame camera, a Nikon D-750.

Susan’s main body of work consists of informal black and white street portraits. She calls this series of pictures, “Our Communities at Work and at Play.”  However, her love for photography does not end there.  She also loves nature photography and is interested in revisiting what got her into photography to begin with: landscape.  She is also beginning to learn astro-landscaping photography and would like to learn more about night and portrait photography and how to make better use her of speedlight.

Susan grew up in New Mexico, was an au pair in Geneva, Switzerland, and has taken a few work-related trips to Romania.  The National Parks have always amazed her.  These are just a few of the places that she would like to visit or revisit with camera in hand.

Although Susan recently closed her practice as a mediator and arbitrator, she is finding “pure delight” working as a volunteer to help a couple of tutoring organizations tell their stories through her photographs of the tutors and the children involved.

Photography is not her only interest – she is also an avid hiker and sea kayaker.

Susan entered a photograph of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts in our March Open Competition.  You will find it with the other award winners in this issue of the Cable Release. Please welcome Susan Green to SSCC and congratulate her for not only becoming our newest member, but also for winning an award.  We look forward to seeing many more of Susan’s images!
