SPEAKER NIGHT — RICK HULBERT — The Complexity, Contradiction, and Confusion over Colour in Photography

Thursday, MAY 1, 2025, at 7:30 p.m.

Abstract

The title of my presentation says it all.

Quoting Joseph Albers, “Every perception of color is an illusion. . . color is almost never seen as it really is . . . as it physically is.”

Did you know that plotting color in a circle has no physical rationale based on the properties of light?

Did you know that the color, Magenta, does not even exist in the visible spectrum?

After providing examples of the reasons for my presentation title,

I will suggest a methodology of how you can confidently embrace color in a creative way . . . from recording light through editing your images.

I will conclude with a couple of optional challenges for you to consider accepting as individuals or as a club wide exercise to share with each other.

COMPETITION COLUMN

Our May topic is Monochrome::

The term “Monochrome Photography” encompasses images that use only a single color, including the full array of shades of that color. So, for example, black and white photos, with black as the single color and its multiple shades of gray, are monochrome. Other single colors and their shades are equally acceptable. Under this definition, a sepia tone photo is acceptable, but a sepia tone photo containing a red umbrella would not qualify as a monochrome. Any subject matter is acceptable. In addition, a photo is acceptable if was originally taken as a color image, as long as the image presented for the competition has been rendered into monochrome.

Projected Portion of Competition

Members may submit up to two images meeting this definition for the Projected competition. Look here for details on Projected submissions. Projected images should be emailed to: competition@ssccphotography.org by midnight (11:59 p.m.) on the day of the month’s Speaker Night.

Remember:

  • Send projected image submissions to competition@ssccphotography.org
  • Format:  JPEG, 1000 KB (max)
  • File Name: Level~Maker’s Name~Image Title.jpg Example:  Advanced~Tom Jones~Washington Landscape.jpg . The tilde “~” character separates the 3 subfields of the file name
  • Level: Novice, Intermediate, or Advanced (see below); capitalization not required.
  • Maker’s Name: spaces allowed. Please use the same name throughout the year to aid record keeping.

Print Portion of Competition

Members may also submit up to two images meeting the definition for the Print competition. Look here (Section IV) for details on submissions. A label template for Print submissions may be found here.

One important detail – In order to participate in either competition, you must pay the club’s annual dues before the start of the competition.

As you may have heard, the Club has changed the competition levels starting in September 2024. The new levels are Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced. To see a list of all 2023-2024 Club members with their tentative competition level assignments, separately for Projected and Print, click here. For details on what this change means for you, click here.

Here’s the schedule for the remainder of the year:

  • June – End of Year Competition (special rules apply)

MAY 31/JUNE 1 FIELD TRIP — Abandoned Pennsylvania

Yellow Dog Village and Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historical Landmark

Date & Time: Saturday, MAY 31nd. We are scheduled for 1 PM at the Village. It’s 238 miles, about 4 hours [depending on speed] .  We drive on Sunday, June 1st to the Blast Furnace, which is towards Washington. It’s about an hour’s drive from Kittanning, and we should try and be there early, although I’ll take care of the administrative stuff.  I scheduled the shoot for 11 a.m..

Location: Worthington PA and Pittsburgh/Rankin PA

To do: Photograph an abandoned village with 16 buildings still standing [mostly houses] and the occasional ghost. https://yellowdogvillage.com

Yellow Dog Village

Image 1 of 3

Then: Night with friends, food, and liquid refreshment; and on Sunday  we visit an abandoned blast furnace at the Homewood Steel Works. The furnace is about an hour’s drive [towards home]. https://riversofsteel.com/attractions/carrie-furnaces/

Fees and arrangements: I have arranged a private visit for both locations—only Club members, no tourists, but it’s not cheap: $50 per person at Yellow Dog Village. At the Blast Furnace, there is a complicated sliding fee for the group. It is roughly $30-40 per person, depending on the number of people. For example, 5 people would be $40, 8 people $30, etc.

Yellow Dog Village is pay on arrival [cash is best].  Carrie Blast Furnace is a group fee; once we have a firm number, I’ll pay and be reimbursed.

The Carrie photo application may be found here. Please provide me with the required personal info and be sure to include your car. I’ll submit for the group.  If possible, please submit the application to me by May 15.  My email is philboyer60@gmail.com.

Liability: Carrie Blast Furnace noted that there is an assumption of the risk for visitors; that’s why there is required guide at $55 per hour for group. There is also a flat group fee, depending on size of group].  I will post a waiver of Club liability to be signed and given/sent to Leader.

Overnight suggestion: It’s about a 4-hour drive to Yellow Dog village [hence the 1 p.m. start]. Plan to stay overnight. We will drive on Sunday to Carrie Blast Furnace which is on the way home. Carpools suggested. I recommend Wingate by Wyndham [$139] but there is also a Quality Inn Royal [$96]; both are in Kittanning, about 7 miles from Yellow Dog Village. Wyndam has much better reviews. Note: The Quality Inn is not listed on Expedia, and don’t confuse it with the 20 other Quality Inns in the area.

Contact me at philboyer60@gmail.com or 301-204-5549 if you wish to coordinate.

Bring: Tripod, Telephoto Lens, flashlight [Furnace is dark] appropriate shoes/clothing for the Blast Furnace [e.g., no flip flops or shorts. ].

Leader: Phil Boyer –301-204-5549, philboyer60@gmail.com

Directions to site: Use GPS, OR Per MapQuest.

YEAR END COMPETITION ENTRY DATES AND RULES

The Year End Competition is not about selecting the best entries for a single month, but rather selecting the best entries from the monthly competitions for the entire club year (September 2024 through May 2025).  The results are announced at the Year End Celebration on June 12.

Send an email to SSCC Historian, Norm Bernache, at normbernache@comcast.net  if you would like a list of all of your print and projected images submitted from September 2024 to April 2025.

As in other competitions, the judge will select first, second, and third place winners, and as many honorable mentions as the number of entries requires. There are no ribbons or points awarded; however, a Best in Show award will be presented, known as the Len Tuchin Award.

Be aware of the submission deadlines in May:

End of Year Competition Entry Schedule

  • Print Deadline: Thursday, May 8 – drop off at Competition meeting at Northwood Presbyterian Church.
  • Projected Deadline:  Friday, May 9 (midnight) – send titles (not images) to Competition@ssccphotography.org via email.

Each member may submit up to 5 projected and 5 print images from those that s/he entered in monthly club competitions this 2024-2025 season. Eligible submissions need not have won an award in the monthly competition(s) in which they were submitted. But please remember — images submitted for the year-end competition must be identical to those submitted in the regular season competitions and entries must be submitted in the same categories (Print or Projected) in which they were originally submitted.

Complete Details on the Rules and the Submission Forms are Found Here.

If you have any questions about the Year End Competition, please ask Dennis Freeman at dennisfreeman4510@msn.com .  I’ll get the right person to answer your question.

ABANDONED COMPETITION – April 10, 2025

April’s competition was Abandoned for projected and print images. James Corbett was our judge.

Awards are generally given for first, second, and third place, with the number of honorable mentions (HM) dependent on the total number of entries in the respective Advanced, Intermediate, and Novice levels.

2nd Place: Maude Svensson ~ Liberty’s Forgotten View
3rd Place: Karen Finkelman ~ Faded Prairie Dreams

This door was shot at Ellis Island. I liked the symmetry of the building, and the vines give it the "abandoned" aura."

INTERMEDIATE PROJECTED

1st Place: Kay Carkhuff ~ Empty Prison
2nd Place: Ilona Linnoila ~ A Skyscraper Abandoned in Los Angeles
3rd Place: Anne Golfer ~ Running On Empty

NOVICE PROJECTED

1st Place: Gerry Woods ~ Abandoned President
2nd Place: Kent Morris ~ Cafe

Gerry Woods ~Abandoned President

Image 1 of 2

This is an aerial photograph of George Washington. It was taken at the "Abandoned President's Heads" near Williamsburg, VA. These twenty-foot tall busts of presidents Washington thru Clinton were originally in a road-side attraction called the "President's Park" which folded in 2010 due to lack of visitors. The busts are now slowly decaying in a field in a local farm.

INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED PRINTS (COMBINED)

1st Place: Sherm Edwards ~ White Chair
2nd Place: Beth Koller ~ Going Anywhere Soon?
3rd Place: Kay Carkhuff ~ Eastern Pen Hallway

Sherm Edwards ~ White Chair

Of all the pictures I took at Ellis Island, this one conveyed most clearly the sense of abandonment of a building. In processing I worked to make the chair stand out a bit from the white wall behind.
