SSCC Presents Portfolio Review 2018

This is a special evening at “A Closer Focus”!  Back by popular demand, the Silver Spring Camera Club (SSCC) will be holding a portfolio review of YOUR work.

We will have a group of five accomplished photographers individually review your work. Each portfolio review will last 10-15 minutes, so you can get individual quality time with each reviewer as they evaluate your images as a body of work.

Requirements to have your photos reviewed:

  1. You must register for the portfolio review in advance at one of our upcoming Thursday meetings (April 5th or April 12th).  Space is limited.  First registered, first served.  If spaces are still available at the event on April 19th, you may register then.
  2. The portfolio review is a benefit of membership so you must be a paid member in good standing of the Silver Spring Camera Club (you’ve paid your SSCC dues for the current fiscal year). If you are not a paid club member and wish to participate, you are invited to join our club — Membership Application.

All guests (non-paid SSCC members) are always welcome at our meetings,  but you will not get a portfolio review.  There will be snacks for everyone, though!

How to prepare:

  • Bring approximately 10 images:
    • Hardcopy prints from 5″ x 7″ to 11″ x 14″ — matted or loose, NOT framed.
    • Digital images should be presented on a tablet or laptop – no smartphone images.
  • Package the portfolio so it can be carried and opened easily.
  • Be prepared to talk about your images and explain the concepts behind them.
  • Prepare a list of questions.
  • Bring only your best work.
  • Don’t make excuses or argue.
  • Take notes.

Two in-depth resources for preparing for a review:

  1. For in-depth tips on preparing your portfolio see: In-depth-tips.pdf
  2. Watch “Feedback on Your Work” – a video by Brooks Jensen:  lensworkonline.com/…/videos/Feedback Review Drama.mp4

This should be both a fun and educational experience for all who attend.  Mark the date on your calendar and plan on being there.

These are the photographers have generously volunteered to review your portfolios:

Robert Greenberg

Bob is a retired dermatologist who has been doing photography for over 60 years. By combining adventure travel with photography, Bob has recorded images of nature, wildlife, and people in various settings around the world.  He believes that while the camera cannot duplicate exactly what the human eye can see, a photograph can convey a sense of the subject, the purpose behind what is depicted, and a story that the viewer can interpret from their own experience and perspective.

Before moving to Maryland, Bob was a member of the Charter Oak Photographic Society in Hartford, Connecticut. He has won awards in juried exhibitions, and his images are in several private collections in both Connecticut and Maryland.

Michael Tran

Michael’s passion for photography began at an early age. He takes his craft very seriously. He is a well known competitor at the Photographic Society of America on the international, national, and local levels.  Michael’s achievements include many awards such as Best of Show. Michael has exhibited his photography at local museums.  His work has been published in the Vien-Du photography collection of images, and also in the Nhat-Bao Vietnamese newspaper and its website.  Michael also judges many major competitions in the U.S.  He is a competition instructor for the Vietnamese Camera Club in the D.C. area.
Michael loves traveling and capturing his adventures with his camera.

Kat Forder

Kat is a both a storyteller and a child at heart. She tells stories of life, love, and make-believe, which allows her to be a pirate one day and a princess the next. Kat graduated from Boston University’s Center for Digital Imaging Arts and is a member of the National Press Photographers Association. She volunteers her camera and skills with Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep and Red Thread Sessions. She works primarily with newborns in the studio and with children on location, creating fantastic make-believe sessions.

My Phuong Nguyen

My Phuong Nguyen is a multiple award-winning photographer who began studying to be a fine art photographer in 2002.  She devotes her time to her passion of photography and is constantly striving to capture award-winning images.  She has won many international competitions and has been awarded medals for Best of Show. She has exhibited her images in local galleries as well as internationally.  She has judged in many major competitions in the U.S.  My Phuong is an active member of PSA.

Greg Holden

Photography provides Greg with an artistic escape from his day job as an aerospace engineer. It is his way of sharing with others how he sees the world. Greg’s photos are mainly from his adventures, traveling the U.S. and hiking in various parks.  He enjoys the challenge of finding interesting shapes and juxtapositions in nature.  While he has seen many beautiful sunrises and landscapes, Greg finds that the little scenes often overlooked by others are the ones that fuel his photographic creativity.  He is always looking beyond the obvious and photographing the things that others might not even notice, like an acorn sprouting, the patterns made by rust and faded paint on an old automobile, or textures in the windblown sand of a local beach.  Sometimes the most amazing images are right there under your feet.
