Seminar Night – Macro Workshop & Book Cover Challenge

On February 23 Gene Luttenberg will lead a macro workshop that will teach you the equipment needed and best practices to get great looking macro shots.  This will be a hands on workshop so bring your camera, macro lens, and tripod to experiment and follow along.

Before the workshop we will take some time to go over the results of the assignment theme.

The assignment theme for Seminar Night will be a Book Cover Challenge.  Write a brief synopsis of a story based on a book’s cover image.

The goal of the assignment is to explore how different people interpret the same image and how an image can trigger other thoughts and creative output.

How it works:

  • Choose one image among the four in this article. The images are all the 1st Place winners from January’s OPEN competition.
  • After choosing an image assign a title to the book and write a synopsis that would be found on the book cover’s inside flap.
  • The synopsis of the story can be any genre at all: fiction, autobiography, non-fiction, sci-fi, reference, anything.
  • You can choose one or all four images to write different book covers.
  • The synopsis should be about one to four paragraphs – similar to what you see on a book covers flap.

An example of a title and synopsis is below from an image taken by Louis Daguerre, the inventor of the Daguerreotype and known as the father of photography:

Two Black Shoes

It’s mid-19th century Paris and a simple cobbler stumbles across a secret that could ruin the most powerful family in France.

Hugo Chaussure, works as a cobbler in the shadows of Notre Dame Cathedral.  One day a new client stops by Hugo’s shop to drop off two black shoes for repair. While working on the shoes a secret is soon discovered that sets in motion a dangerous series of events.

Hugo must navigate his way through the world of the working class and high society as he tries to protect himself and his family from the evil forces that want the found secret buried, at any cost.  From the back streets of Le Marais to the halls of Versailles, Hugo searches for answers that will free his family from the clutches of the Argonauts, the controllers of France and Hugo’s future.  Lilly and Audrey Argonaut, only daughters of Baron Argonaut, sympathize with Hugo, both jeopardizing their inheritance and their own safety.

The three set off on a harrowing adventure that answers unasked questions and ultimately changes the workings of Parisian society.

Please use one of the four competition winner images, ignoring their original titles.  Do not use Daguerre’s example image.
